Our ideal day in La Plagne

One of the Alps' most impressive ski resorts, 9 base of villages all of which carry their own unique character, Montchavin at one end and Montalbert at the other with purpose built La Plagne Bellecote, Belle Plagne, Plagne soleil, Plagne Centre, Plagne Village and Aime Plagne in between. La Plagne is recognised as the worlds most visited ski resort!

WHY WE LOVE LA PLAGNE

  • Excellent off piste
  • Most slopes are above 2000m
  • It’s a great family-friendly destination

Beginners

La Plagne is a good place to learn, and each village has at least one free beginner lift. As La Plagne is so high it’s a snow sure resort throughout most of the season. Plagne Centre in our opinion is probably the best bet as it also has the best beginner slopes in the area for first timers. Progression after this onto longer, gentle runs are easy. Just remember that the normal French system of using green runs is not in use here – choose easy blues instead!

Intermediates

The whole of La Plagne is for intermediates with a crazy number of blue runs, and reds! Practice your carving and go for a blast down some of the widest, well-groomed pistes! Those looking for longer tree lined runs should drop down towards Montchavin or traverse their way to Montalbert. By doing this you will see and understand how big the resort is! The sunny Champagny area is definitely worth visiting and those who want even more skiing so should purchase the Paridiski lift pass allowing you to ski over to Les arcs and play on their 200kms of skiing!

Advanced

For the advanced skiers this resort is brilliant when the snow is good. The best and hardest runs are all located above the bellcote treeline. However, the long runs down are fantastic when the conditions are right. The Biolley sector is fantastic, un-groomed area marked on the piste map as ‘natur’ but they are not prepared so watch out for the bumps! The skiing over in Champagny appears quite rough and ready in comparison to the other side of the mountain but it is fabulous. With big vertical drops – from Roche de Mio down to Champagney the vertical drop is 1500m and boasts some awesome views over the Vanoise National Park.

Apres Ski

La Plagne isn’t as crazy or as well know for its Après ski, but when the resort is lively and full of party goes it does get quite lively! The Tete Inn and the Cheyenne are the main bars, whilst Scotty’s is popular in Plagne centre. For the night time ravers we recommend a night in Le Saloon. A popular haunt among both seasonaires and tourists, this venue will start to get lively at midnight and usually kicking until the early hours!

Ski Schools

All the villages in La Plagne have ski schools with the companies ESF and Oxygene ski school. This makes choosing a lesson easy as most meeting points will be just at the bottom of the runs in these villages. All instructors are English speaking and have a variety of different lesson choices!

Non-Skiers

Whilst La Plagne is a fantastic ski resort we know that sometimes people want to do the other activities. Here are a few options for you to think about. Why not buy a pedestrian pass and jump on a lift? Sit at the top of the slopes at one of the beautiful restaurants! Ride a skidoo, horse drawn sleigh or husky rides. Book a tandem paragliding experience! Fly through the skies on a clear day and get a bird’s eye view of the resort, there is no better way to see it all! If you want to relax head down

to the spa and relax and enjoy the wellness centres!

Ski Hire

We recommend Ski Republic for all your rental needs be it either skis and poles, snowboards, helmets... these guys do it all! They have a variety of shops in La Plagne and we can sort this out for you to make it easier when you get there!
